Bloomfield is a small town in southeast Iowa with a population of just over 2,600. We have a wonderful school system located on the East end of town next to our multi-purpose Mutchler Community Center with a 2-court gym, walking and running track, a racquetball court and exercise equipment for your total recreation and workout. The community has also just begun construction on a trails system, the first phase of which has just been opened to the public.
Also close-by are the local swimming pool, city park, and Country Club. We have a very beautiful historic courthouse and one of the most-preserved town squares in the nation, featuring unique businesses and shops.
On the outskirts of town, there is more recreation to be found at the McGowen Recreation & Wildlife Area, which features cabins, RV hookups, nine fishing ponds, campgrounds, hiking areas, and horseback riding trails.
Lake Wapello State Park is nearby, as is Van Buren county’s Lake Lacey and Lake Rathbun in Appanoose County. Our own Lake Fisher is just outside of Bloomfield city limits, great for picnics and hiking – not to mention its state-record largemouth bass, RV hookups and disc golf.
We are just a short drive from the famous American Gothic House, captured by Iowa artist Grant Wood. Bloomfield is blessed to have a diverse Amish community with dozens of businesses you can enjoy, such as Furniture, discount shops, greenhouses, lumberyards, food & bakeries, quilt shops, sawmills and more.
